We are excited and thrilled to teach this comprehensive 18th Century series. Inspired by the American Duchess Book by the incredibly knowledgeable Lauren Stowell and Abby Cox.

Our very own Mela Hoyt-Heydon will cover many of the techniques taught in the American Duchess book along with her own techniques developed from years as a Union Costume Designer and Historical Costume Creator. 

This series will cover traditional 18th century clothing beginning with undergarments including; shift, stays, petticoat, and bum pad. Finishing with an Italian style gown. 

You may take the classes separately or take the entire series. 

This class will cover making an Italian Style Gown. It will be taught on 3 separate Tuesday evening classes.

"The Italian Gown (English) or Robe a l'Anglaise (French) - Beginning in the 1770s, a new style of fitted-back gown replaced the English gown. The Italian gown closed at the center front and featured a seamed back in either four pieces or two, replacing the earlier pleated back. There are several variants of the Italian gown - what we modernly call a "zone" front or cutaway front (below), a chemise front, various sleeve lengths including long sleeves, trimmed, untrimmed, etc. The defining factor is the back seams.**Yes, both gowns above are called "Robe a l'Anglaise" in French. The term is not incorrect, but it's important to distinguish between the two styles of gown. While the English Gown and Italian gown are contemporary for a very short time, one does pre-date the other and the construction techniques differ. " (American Duchess )

Class time: 3 sessions, 3 hours each class        

Maximum class size: 8 people

Supplies needed: A supply list will be sent once you have registered. 

Prerequisites: Introduction to the Sewing Machine and Beginning Sewing or basic sewing skills
